If you look up the word farm in the dictionary the most common definition you will find is, " a tract of land devoted to agricultural purposes" (Merian Webster Dictionary). This concept does not define a specific amount of land or type of agricultural purposes. So we decided to use the term farm in our business name for a few reasons. The first is that we have become students of the Ancient Americans. Studying Native Americans and their medicines has allowed us the perspective that the wild forest is a place of endless abundance and bounty. In return for these gifts comes a huge responsibility of sustainability and earth stewardship. Freeborn Family Farms aligns with these concepts at its core. Another reason for the concept of 'farm' is that we wish to go back to the old ways of domestic and local agriculture. Before massive, corporate agriculture took over, America once was a land of only small family farms and food remained local and grown without harmful chemicals. It's time we go back to the old ways. We someday will have a large plot of land but for now we will farm where we can: in our yard, my folks land and where our generous friends and families permit. We also believe that the most potent medicine is to be cultivated by the hands of the medicine maker or better yet grown in the wild! Working with the local flora and fauna has taught us that the most potent remedies come from the wild. Our children understand these concepts and we wish to start this business so that they can grow and have this foundation to farm and be stewards of this bountiful land.
